My Office Painting

Posted in Arts and Crafts, Life in Belgium, Painting with tags , , , , , , , , on February 21, 2009 by Yarn Over New York

My fellow stage manager, Anna and I decided to paint our office to spruce up the rather spartan atmosphere in the studio.  We have been planning to do this for some time and postponed for one reason or another.

Finally on Friday (13 Feb), the planets aligned!  Armed with 3 colors of house paint and 10 tubes of cheap acrylic, we set out to conquer the white walls.

Hendrik the Cameraman

We started at 7pm . . .  A camera team from the documentary filmed the process, of course.

Some of the artists came by and commented on the differences in the two sides of the room.  At 10pm the camera crew made us stage an ending to the process and then left.

Then we painted some more.  Anna helped out.

Then Anna gave up and I painted alone.

Then the next day at work, I painted more.

Some artists and divers and a 4 year old added their own touch.

The labor continues daily in my office.  I try to do a little bit each day and try to get at least one other person to pick up a brush too.

I will keep the photos coming.  I can’t wait to see what it looks like in 5 months.

For all my friends and family, I dedicate this song to you.  Remember that somewhere out there a Cactus Lady is thinking of you . . .

(don’t read anything into the lyrics)

Also, here is a photo of me that I didn’t turn out as good as I would have liked but still really want to share with you too.

La Femme Cactus in Brussels (again)

On Monday (16 Feb), La Femme Cactus (aka Skoopy) set out for Brussels with Tomek (diving coach) and Marshall (artist) went to Brussels for the day.

Our first stop was the Atomium at the 1958 World’s Fair Site.

After the Atomium and surrounding grounds, we drove in the Centrum and walked around a bit.  We had Thai for lunch (finally, I have been missing it so).  Marshall got a haircut and Tomek and looked at art.

We found a chocolate shop that sells CHOCOLATE ATOMIUMS.  I was too scared to look at the price, but I did sneak in a capture a quick shot.

We had a couple of drinks at a nearby bar and then had a nice Italian dinner.

All in all, it was quite a nice relaxing day.  I found an awesome chocolate sign in the rubbish outside of the Godiva store and took it for display in our office window.

Antwerpen Wanderings

Posted in Life in Belgium, Travel Europe with tags , , , , on February 17, 2009 by Yarn Over New York

Last Monday (9 Feb) I went to Antwerp to do some shopping and wandering.  My favorite part was the Ferris Wheel at the River Scheldt.

Unfortunately, I do not really have any good story to share, just some photos.

It is obviously being dismantled.  Here are some photos from other people.

What is this Bird?

Posted in Life in Belgium, Travel Europe with tags , , , , , on February 16, 2009 by Yarn Over New York

This post is a shout-out to my friend Elise.  She a smart lady who studies birds.  Having a friend with a good deal of knowledge on any particular subject is a good excuse to completely neglect you own pursuit of knowledge on said subject.  Your friend becomes a resource.  Elise is my resource for birds.  Whenever I see an interesting bird and am unable to recognize its breed, I simply snap a photo of it and ask Elise to identify said bird.  Often she sends me informative links to websites about the bird too.

So here is my request, Elise.  Name this bird.  Sighted in February 2009 in a pond at the Atomium building.

Why 30 is the new 20

You know that great, enthusiastic feeling you have when you graduate from High School?  Your life is going to CHANGE, the world is your oyster!

Brussels

Brussels

Another way to get that feeling is to give up all your worldly possessions and move across the world to join the circus.  All of us here are pretty much in the same boat, having left family, friends and homes behind to live in a tiny suburb in a strange (emphasis on strange) new country.  We spend all day working and training in a crazy studio with a giant pool, gymnastics equipment and flying apparatuses.

We are all getting to know each other and enjoying making new friends.  Therefore, we are partying away like we are all 18 again.  I am having a great amount of fun and staying out way too late on the weekends.  It’s a blast.

Here are some photos of Friday night two weeks ago.

One evening, Jessie (Skoopy La Femme Catcus), Anna, Mathieu and Warren were kidnapped in a yellow bus by David and Bob.

But you have to be careful, because if you indulge too much, 30 can be the new 4!

Lately I went to an all-night-ish Superbowl Party.  I supported Pittsburgh (in respect for the 6 years I lived there) rather than Arizona (where I spent a grueling week working a hair show last fall).

I have to admit that we left at 3:30am and did not actually see the last quarter, but you have to give us credit for trying.  Being 20 again is hard!
